Drop in sessions this week to help celebrate 50 years of Goole Library and Museum
Goole Library and Museum will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in November, and staff in both facilities would like to collect memories of the building from the public.
Museum curator Debbie Hardy and librarian Hayley Nicholson are hoping that people will bring in both photographs and anecdotal memories, which can be recorded using the library tablet. The aim is to get enough footage to make a short video which can then be played on the actual anniversary day, projected onto a wall in the library and on to the screen in the Education Room of the Museum.
There will be drop in days when people can come in and videos can be made (photos can be handed in at any time). These drop in sessions will be held on Friday, 14 September from 1pm to 4pm in the Museum with Debbie Hardy, and on Saturday, 15 September from 9am - 1pm in the Library with Hayley Nicholson.
Debbie Hardy explained : “We would like members of our community to come in and chat to us about their memories of both the library and museum. Maybe they came to the original opening event, saw a memorable exhibition, read a book that changed their lives, met an author or an artist - oranything they want to share with us.”
Visitors will be able to write down their memories; transcripts will be in a flip book, along with any photographs brought in by the public.
Hayley Nicholson added : “We would love people to bring in photographs, specifically of this building, but also of the previous library, and Goole in general. We'd like to take copies of them to add to our collection.
“We would also like to film people taking about the building, and the previous one. Lots of people comment on the big, grand staircase that used to be here (I remember it too!!) and we want to record these memories to make a short film - anything anecdotal, really.”
For those who would like to take part, but who can’t make it on those dates, people can send in their memories via post or email. The email address email@example.com and the postal address is: Goole Library & Museum, Carlisle Street, Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, DN14 5DS.
